LAN
Local area network - a network in a building or on a site
usually used to connect computers together.
LCD
Liquid Crystal Display. A low-power monitor
LED
Light Emitting Diode. A semiconductor device that emits
visible light when conducting current
LFE
Low Frequency Effects. Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 soundtracks
feature a dedicated bass channel (.1) specifically to
cater for and process low frequency sounds and add emphasis
and depth to soundtracks.
Li-Ion
Stands for Lithium Ion. Many digital cameras take a dedicated
Li-ion rechargeable battery. They hold more power than
other types of battery, and don't suffer from the 'memory
effect', where a partially charged battery, when recharged,
will only register the additional charge rather than its
full capacity.
LNB
The Low Noise Block does several things: its horn focuses
the reflected beam from the dish down onto a tiny aerial
inside the LNB. In the modern "voltage switching"
LNB there are two aerials - one for Horizontal and one
for Vertical signals. The signals go right through the
thin plastic rain cap on the horn and are received by
the two aerials inside. These weak signals are amplified
by an electronic amplifier. As these very high microwave
frequencies are used the LNB then converts them into lower
frequencies which will go down coax cable.
LW
Long Wave. A type of radio broadcasting.
