Anti-Virus
Anti-virus software is used to scan emails and files on your computer and to detect and remove any viruses. It also prevents them being passed to other files and computers in emails and documents. The software can be bought from most computer stores and should be kept up to date.

Apache
A free web server program. Apache is usually associated with Unix/Linux, but is also available for Windows. A web server is the high-powered computer that runs your website.

Aperture
Behind the lens of a camera is a movable circular iris which opens and closes much like the pupil of an eye to control the amount of light falling on the CCD. This is usually controlled by the light meter, although some of the cameras have a Manual Mode. Altering the aperture also changes the Depth of Field.

Applet
A small program, normally written in Java. Applets run in a web browser and are downloaded automatically when you visit a web page. They are used to provide calculators, crosswords and other interactive features.

Artefacts
When an image is stored in your camera's memory it has to be compressed to fit, usually in a JPEG File, and in the process some information is inevitably lost. When the image is uncompressed for viewing, noise creeps in and appears as angular blocks in the image, which are known as artefacts.

Attachment
An Attachment is a file which is 'attached' and sent with a standard text e-mail message. Often photographs or word documents are attached to e-mails.
